Louisville Metro Police launch full-time mobile response unit to work with homeless community
LMPD has taken a new approach to addressing homelessness in Louisville, moving away from arrests and focusing on outreach. Officers Robert Yoshioka and Jessica Morrison now work full-time in a homeless outreach mobile response unit, aiming to connect homeless individuals with food, clothing, housing, and mental health or drug rehabilitation services. Partnering with community organizations like Fed With Faith and Hip Hop Cares, they help distribute resources and coordinate efforts to assist those in need.
Although the mobile unit has yet to receive funding from Metro Council, they continue to rely on community partnerships to support their mission. In some cases, when relocation is necessary due to building code violations, the officers work with individuals to help them transition to a safer space and find additional support.
